GWM, 10 x 8, UNCUT
8x10 photographs inspired by personal ads.
The 6th Annual Highways Gallery Fundraiser
Cruise the personal ads "Highways Style" and enjoy music and entertainment at The 6th Annual Highways Gallery Fundraiser: GWM, 10 x 8, UNCUT. The exhibit takes a look at the gay personal ad scene as photographers showcase 8 x 10 photos that are inspired by personal ads! The exhibit opens Thursday August 5, 2004 at 7:00pm. Twenty bucks gets you in the singles mix and proceeds directly benefit Highways Gallery.

Although GWM, 10 x 8, UNCUT appears on the surface to pander to prurient interests, the exhibit is an historical "time stamp" on contemporary gay culture and a relevant social commentary on gay mating rituals in the third millennium.

"It would be a glaring omission of any historian looking back on queer social morays at the eve of the 3rd millennium and not mention personal ad dating," says show curator and artist Philip Hitchcock. It is ironic that as a community we are fighting for the right to marry while still struggling to find the time and proper avenues to even meet the right person."

"Anyone who has ever been on a personal ad web site totally gets the vibe of this exhibit. It is an exploration of how we as gay men attempt to market ourselves to each other and which assets we choose to make our calling cards."

The opening night soiree will feature an appetizer buffet and no host cocktails. Also featured are select lounge acts and unsolicited dating advice from our panel of experts.

Highways is located at 1621 18th Street in Santa Monica.

MYTH showcases new works by Hitchcock that are inspired by Celtic, Greek, and Hindu, mythologies. Especially evocative among the new works are, The Eyes of Argus, The Myth of the Minotaur, and The Birth of Cernunnous. Argus is the trusted 100 eyed guard sent by Hera to watch over Zeus' concubine. Hermes slew him and the distraught Hera collected his beautiful eyes to be forever preserved in the feathers of the Peacock. The Minotaur is the abomination born to Pasipha after she seduced a White Bull sent by Poseidon. Cerrnunous, who pre-dates Christianity, is the Celtic God of fertility and renewal and is always depicted with Stag horns and an erect phallus.

"I have long been fascinated by the overt eroticism and sexually driven story lines of classical myth", confides Hitchcock. "I discovered that the sanitized stories I heard as a kid were actually rich with prurience! So I decided to create works that were a celebration of sexual fantasy, yet still grounded in the classics."

A special artist discussion will be held on Sunday, August 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The artist will present slides and video and lead a frank discussion of his work. There will also be a demonstration of Hitchcock's bodycast technique on a nude male model.

HITCHCOCK COMMISSIONED BY THE WWF
View the Hitchcock Exhibit

March, 2002- Artist Philip Hitchcock has been commissioned by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) to create bodycast sculptures of seven wrestling Superstars. The sculptures will be exhibited at the annual "Wrestlemania Fan Axxess" show, held this year in Toronto, Canada.

"The idea of the exhibit," according to Hitchcock, "was to capture the essence of each wrestler's signature move. These are the poses and gestures which are instantly recognizable to fans."

The sculptures are on display as part of the Wrestlemania Fan Axxess show at The National Trade Centre Automotive Building at Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event takes place Thursday, March 14, through Saturday, March 16, 2002 from 12:00 to 4:30 pm and 6:00 to 10:30 pm on all three days. Meet the artist from 2:00 to 8:00pm each day.

ITALIAN COLLECTOR COMMISSIONS
"SECOND ORIGINALS"

A collector from Cagliari, Italy was disappointed to learn that another buyer had already purchased two of Philip Hitchcock's original sculptures, FOOTSOLDIER and OVERLORD. The two sculptures from Hitchcock's exhibit "Medieval/ Millennial" were among the first to sell. Since the sculptures were originals, no secondary molds were made. This made the notion of "editions" impossible.

To solve the problem, Hitchcock offered to recreate the pieces from the ground up. In one instance he was even able to hire the same model! While an attempt was made to be true to the feeling and spirit of the originals, exact copies were neither attempted nor desired. The "originals" are on the left, the "second originals" are on the right. Compare and contrast the following photos.

In the case of "FOOTSOLDIER", the same model was used, though dieting made him look leaner through the abdominals. The pose is nearly identical except for the tilt of the head and position of the left hand. In the "second original," the legs were left a little longer and the arc of the chest piece was changed. Wolf claws were substituted for muskrat claws and the Sheep skull shoulder armor was created from smaller skulls and extended slightly.

Greater differences are apparent with "OVERLORD" and OVERLORD 2". Here Hitchcock used a different model altogether. Mouflon Ram horns are as distinct as fingerprints so there is a big difference here. The collector also requested a bluish overall hue to the piece. Other differences are the shape of the eye pieces and the addition of a microphone. Once again, Wolf claws were used in place of Muskrat claws.

Buyers interested in commissions and "second originals" may contact the artist direct via e-mail.
